dr.tygen's Contest Submission

Post by dr.tygen »

Welcome to the Hotel Mysteria.

Once the prime (and only) location for weary travelers for miles, the Hotel Mysteria has been abandoned for years due to a brutal and well-publicized murder that the police never solved. As is common with many such sites, ghostly tales have sprung up, deterring visitors and would-be tourists. Until recently, the stone hotel remained a landmark of a forgotten era.
Now, an unnatural process is taking place. Parts of the hotel, stone and all, have decayed, vanishing into nothingness. The now very unstable building has prompted engineers to send a surveyor to assess the damage and determine the next move.
The Hotel Mysteria awaits its first guest in 200 years...

This map began as a tribute to the Disneyland/Disney World attraction "The Tower of Terror," which I visited prior to designing the map. I built a full model of the hotel, and decided that it wasn't interesting enough. I began to take apart the map, piece by piece.
There is an elevator shaft situated to the ... er... west of the hotel (assuming the entrance is facing south) that one can "jump" up by using the small platforms lining the shaft. (Since this map was built with the RPG, an elevator was not possible.)
One can pass through solid doors that are "unlocked." Certain hotel rooms (hint, look at the front desk where the keys are kept) are "unlocked" (you can pass through them) and others are not. If you are too impatient, you can look under the door: a lit room means it is "unlocked."

I hope users enjoy exploring this map.

I pray it is packaged right.....

I'm simply speechless! I never really expected anything this good. You have real potential ! That little model of the map in the lobby really caught my eye also! I loved exploring this map, and I can see obviously how much time and effort you put into this. I don't know what to say I dislike...I like everything 5/5!

Packaging was very simple, and your .txt was very informative 5/5
The way your map is lighted is excellent! I loved the little small details you put everywhere 5/5
The only problem I had was the skybox didn't load correctly, but that MAY just be me.

You know what? It's because I modeled it in the RPG. The regular Sandbox doesn't have that skybox!

BIG mistake on my part... DOPE. If you have the RPG, it's nice... :D Or you could load the night sky one on the regular sandbox.

It totally slipped my mind that that might be a problem. SHOOT! BLAST! GRRR....

packaging

pros
* There's screenshots, everything in it's right place!

cons
* you forgot to include your extra art, ie the twilight skybox
* the zip was named packages

notes
* you might want to use a less generic name in the future for your readmes, and name your maps with words other than your name :P

4/5

the map

pros
* the geometry is highly rudimentary, but very effective and detailed
* the lights are well done

cons
* many of the details are textures upon flat geometry, you might like to
* some of the decay resembles accidental deleting of the geometry.
* I spawned on the outside of the map :(

notes
* the window frames could've been done better, you could've made another layer of geometry outside that to be the frame (see the windows in mansion)
* have you considering texturing the light sources to look like light sources? or even use particles in a few of them?
* have you considered deforming some of the decay holes, and leaving little bits and chunks of debris over the place?

4/5

this is by far the best submission we've had, you've deserved your 4/5 from me
I hope you have time to improve it based on those criteria. I'd be interested in including it, even if someone else bests your score ;)

That's something that was bothering me, GR1M. This map took me longer than 2 weeks. I started it before the contest began, and had plenty of time to work on it. I don't know if that disqualifies me, because that could be considered putting me on a different playing field. (The map I was working on specifically for the contest couldn't get finished in time, since I had to create upwards of 30 new textures and furnish all the rooms.)
