Try doing /Thirdperson 1 to get in thirdperson mode and /thirdperson 0 to get out of it.

In 2.6.1 my 9 button also doesn't work. so try this command /thirdperson 1 and to close the thirdperson try this /thirdperson 0

I can't do anything about the modelling or scripting part....Modeling is plain hard for newbie like me...and scripting is something I am yet in process of learning.
