Questions About Sandbox

Post by Austin »

1) I was wondering if when i make a game in Sandbox if i can have it multiplayer like its not just one person playing on there computer its a whole lot of people playing on a big world like a game called runescape.

2) Also if i make the game on my computer is there some kind of admin panel or something were a staff mate can accesd on the game to work on it with me on a different computer.

3) is there a way to make a client with a single player world with just them and a multi player world were its everyone.

All of that is possible, I don´t quite understand what you mean with 2nd point tho. But I say that abandon the project rightaway. Start with something you can handle.
You sound like hundreds of other 10 year olds, who have played runescape and then get an idea: "Oh I should make sth like this too!". I´m not saying that the age of 10 is a problem and I´m sorry if you are older. I know a couple of 10 year olds who are more skilled in some stuff than me.
But you´ll have to realize: making a multiplayer game like runescape takes years, even for a company who has thousands of employees. And those employees all have high education in IT...
So I don´t mean that you shouldn´t try to make games. Far from it. I even encourage you to make games. But first start off with sth you can do, like a singleplayer RPG. If it turns out good you can always turn it into a multiplayer RPG. But with no experience in game making its real hard and quite pointless to try to make a MMORPG. The simplest thing: Do you have hundreds or even thousands of dollars to pay for the server hostings every month?

for one thing i did not mean it as i wanted to recreate a game 'like' rune scape i was using it as an example as a multiplaer game to see if i can make a multi player game in Sandbox. and also i am 15 and i do understand what you mean i have been practicing on a lot of 2D mmorpg makers and now i am starting on 3D just because i asked a few questions dose not mean i know nothing.

Austin. I never said you know nothing. I just said that creating a MMO, (it doesn´t need to be like runescape in any ways except maybe success level? I think everyone want to make sth so popular as Runescape, which has often been refered as "The most loved and most hated game in the world") Is really hard and takes long time.
I still recommend to make some maps first, then do some coding and If you have a good prototype then make it multiplayer. If you have nothing, then people won´t help you, because there are hundreds or even thousands of people who basically want others to make the game for themselves. But if you have good concepts or even better prototypes, then theres always help. If you make a good prototype and I like it, then I could help you go multiplayer...

That´s the spirit :P
I recommend you to start of with a map, then make another map, then link them together, make more maps, make some story, make some quests and voila, you have a game :)

If you want to learn the ropes and strings, I can tell you what i did. First of all the wiki and FAQs would be the first place any one would start, second try looking at other mods and their guides and tutorials...I got most my information from sacuerbraten. lastly downloading player made maps through "Show of your work" really helped me just by looking at the scripts in the maps .cfg files, checking out the geometry seeing how many cube flips it takes to get that angle...just small things that really helped along the road.
