You can definitely do something similar, but it will require a lot of work on your part.
if you want to see what we've accomplished so far, just load up the RPG module.
We have quite a few new toys in the SVN

I am working of my game as well. That makes my game inferior in looks though I have been improving the graphics as I work on it. Though right now you would need alot of code everything else. That is why when I get my game up those that helped me on sandbox can play it. There is still much work be done, but you have to start somewhere to get things moving.
