It might happen... If there is a team of coders... who also have many 3D and 2D artists... And who are willing to work extremely hard... and who are willing to invest in the project...
Since that is rather improbable I recommend you to make sth simpler first... If you have made a game, then the probability for you to be able to join a team who can make a MMO is MUCH bigger.
Don´t be frightened of my comment (and other peoples comments, miracles can happen...), my own first idea was to make a MMORPG to... I didnt abandon the project, I just delayed it. Currently I´m working on a RPG (not with sandbox, but it might aswell be sandbox, makes things even easier, cuz sandbox is one of the easiest and fastest (in terms of making your game) engines). If I manage to complete my rpg, then I´ll start thinking about maybe making the RPG multiplayer... (you can start by making it so that two people can complete the story together etc...) And if that is done too, then you can make it MMO (if you want)...
But if you are not so keen on the RPG part but rather the MMO part, then why not make a virtual world MMO, where people can talk, ride cars and do such stuff... It requires A LOT less coding and actually has higher probability to become popular...
