Coop Edit Problems

Yes I know this has probably been posted a million times, but i cant find it. Im trying to connect with this guy (who lives in Italy).
1. I open server.bat and the black dialogue comes up. All is good
2. I go to multiplayer and update server list. There I am, I join it.
3. He updates his server list. I'm not there.
4. I tell him to type /connect 95.238.195.239 which is my ip addy
5. It says connecting, connecting, connecting, connecting to server failed.
Am I doing the correct things?
(I dont have a clue about port forwarding or the like - is it really necessary, or is there something basic im doing wrong)

Nope - how do I and do you think its necessary, and do we both need to do it or just the host?
