The slowness of 2.6.1

Well I did look for a topic in which to put this, but nothing stood out to me. Okay I downloaded 2.6.1 thinking it would probably run even better on my XP computer than 2.6, because, well, it's a newer version and newer versions usually have the kinks worked out of them.
Sadly no. I couldn't even run the thing for more that three minutes before I was completely frustrated by the lag. I mean the kind where you watch the mouse jerk across the screen an inch at a time every two seconds.
I tried restarting it and I tried reseting to defaults, but nothing worked. So I'm back to using 2.6. Which is stable on my computer for some reason, even though I would have liked to use the newer model. So if there's some kind of compatibility issues with XP, I don't know. My computer was purchased in 2007, so it's probably getting older and I should expect such things, but I just thought I'd get the information out there for you guys to think about. Don't know if there's a way for me to fix it or not, but I'm open to suggestions.
(2.6 is still pretty awesome for me though, now I just need to buckle down and learn coding)
